Effects of Churn on Structured P2P Overlay Networks

چکیده
As structured p2p systems becomes largely deployed, the size of the network becomes large enough that any kind of churn has a significant influence on the performance of such overlay. In structured p2p systems, peers create interactive link with other peers called neighbours that both depend on and influence each other. While peers trust each other’s to delivers services, the network effects exerted from peer to peer interactions remain virtually unexplored. This paper focuses on peer churn, where a significant number of peers join and leave the overlay frequently in a short time interval. The effects of such problem remain widely ignored yet may play a vital role in protection of such overlay. The direction and strength of this effect are evaluated experimentally on Chord and Kademlia protocol by measurement the set of metrics that describe the performance attributes such as efficiency, stability and scalability. Keywords— structured P2P overlay networks; churn; measurement; performance.

Static Resiliency vs Churn-Resistance Capability of DHT-Protocols
During the last few years, the topic of peer-to-peer networking (P2P hereafter) has gained significant attention from the research community. The focus has mainly been on the design, implementation and evaluation of systems based on Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs), as these structures have potential to become a general purpose substrate for distributed applications. Nonetheless, there are still ...
متن کاملOn the Design of Semi-structured Multi-star Hybrid-Overlays for Multi-attribute Range Queries
In the past few years, resource discovery is an important mechanism in P2P applications. P2P networks could be categorized into structured and unstructured. In general, structured P2P networks (DHTs) provide efficient keyword search, but is difficult to offer a variety of search modes. Unstructured P2P networks are applied to highly churn P2P networks, but they are inefficient. In this paper, w...
متن کاملEstimating Churn in Structured P2P Overlay Networks
Structured peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have become an important alternative to the classic client-server architecture. Participating peers can join and leave the system at arbitrary times, a process which is known as churn. Many recent studies revealed that churn is one of the main problems faced by any Distributed Hash Table (DHT). As a countermeasure most DHT protocols have to invest a signif...
متن کاملPerformance analysis and optimized operation of structured overlay networks
The ongoing process of globalization leads to a huge demand for highly scalable applications. The Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology enables an arbitrary large number of users to participate and contribute to distributed services like content distribution or collaboration. With P2P, the intelligence is shifted from centralized instances to the edges of the Internet. This shift is supported by the wi...
متن کاملA Performance Evaluation Framework for Mobile P2P Overlays under Churn
With the popular use of the mobile intelligence equipment, including smartphones and mobile tablets, mobile peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have become increasingly important. In recent years some mobile P2P overlays have been proposed. We propose a three-dimension evaluation framework for mobile P2P overlays under churn. Three P2P overlays, named as GIA, M-GIA, and KCCO(k-Clique Community Overlay)...
